New York

A city of canyons made of sky-high towers and neon, New York has always been the benchmark for first-rate dining, unparalleled shopping, cultural events and total coolness.

Its diversity shines as brightly as the high-voltage hues of Times Square -- and busy streets are dusted with an urban mix of museums, restaurants, shopping districts and more than a generously irresistible amount of compelling chaos.

It's love at first sight when the Empire State Building first comes into view and the Statue of Liberty renders speechless even those most blase. Broadway shows will wow you; browsing Bloomingdale's will amaze you.

It's always possible to stumble upon an unforgettable meal, be it a just-out-of-the-oven slice of perfect pizza or a haute-gourmet nine-course dinner by candlelight.

The views from the Staten Island Ferry are a knockout, and downtown nightlife will keep you busy 'til the dawn's early light.

Think Uptown-Downtown and East Side-West Side. Avenues run uptown and downtown, and most are numbered. Fifth Avenue is the dividing line between the East and West Sides. East Side avenues include: Madison, Park, Lexington, Third, Second, First and York. West Side avenues include Central Park West, Columbus, Amsterdam (which is Ninth Avenue below 72nd Street), Broadway, Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue to the locals), Seventh, Eighth, Tenth, Eleventh, Twelfth and West End. Streets above Houston Street run east-west (crosstown) and are numbered consecutively. Below Houston is a melange of street names such as Ludlow, Delancey, Canal and Wall.

You'll find Central Park smack dab in the middle of the city with many of the city's best museums on either side.

Check out the Upper East Side for a seriously glamorous shopping haven along Madison Avenue and the Upper West Side for Lincoln Center, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Columbia University, Grant's Tomb and the new Time-Warner Center's luxurious Shops at Columbus Circle.

Surrounding Manhattan are Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Many Brooklyn neighborhoods have become as popular and chic as Manhattan's. Smart shops and tony restaurants have spread like wildfire and now Manhattanites - who would never have believed it possible - make the trip over the bridge for a bite at totally fashionable restaurants and some serious shopping.Three Brooklyn communities that are definitely worth a look are Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg and Brighton Beach.

The Bronx has experienced minimal gentrification, but there are some things to pursue beyond the Bronx Zoo such as the New York Botanical Garden, Yankee Stadium and Woodlawn Cemetery - the final resting place of Duke Ellington, George M. Cohan, Miles Davis, F. W. Woolworth, J.C. Penney and R.H. Macy.
